The citizens that reside as well as pass through the Burton Fire District are our most valuable assets. Burton firefighters E. Chapman, T. Carneavale, J. Perry and M. Melendez were invited to the Beaufort Fun Park and given the opportunity to experience first hand the way the Fun Park helps make people aware of the dangers of driving under the influence. It is known as the DUI Experience.

The DUI Experience is a unique program designed to help save lives through safe hands-on experience using go-karts on a track. Drivers wearing the "4 beer" goggles experience reduced motor skills that result in the same dangerous driving conditions that happen when a driver under the influence gets behind the wheel of an automobile. The scenarios are set up to explain what would happen if you had been behind the wheel of a real automobile. Just imagine losing your drivers' licenses, thousands of dollars in fines, family hardships, and potential deaths are all likely results of the actions of driving

under the influence. The difference between the DUI experience and real life is, you get to take off your goggles and see for yourself how badly you and others you may know drive, walk and perform other simple tasks.  This helps you to imagine what risks you would have taken without this knowledge. Due to this "hands-on" approach, you will walk away with a much better understanding of the dangers of driving under the influence. After the scenarios were finished we listened to a touching closing statement by the staff and we were then given a ticket for a complimentary hot dog and drink. The Beaufort Fun Park as well as the 4 firefighters that attended would like you to take the opportunity and bring your family and friends to attend this event, “You could become a hero to somebody”.

Take a look at this video below of our firefighters attempting to complete simple tasks while wearing the "4 beer" goggles.  Notice not only what is taking place in the foreground, but also the firefighters trying to walk a straight line in the background, and the wreckless driving of the other D.U.I. drivers at the event.
