Today as crews were set to start military vehicle familiarization training aboard the Marine Corps Air Station for the upcoming Vigilant Guard Exercise, the "3 Engine" was dispatched to an accident with injuries on Hwy 170 in the vicinity of the Broad River Pantry.
Once enroute, Beaufort County Dispatch advised of two vehicles overturned with entrapment. Port Royal Engine 5 was added to the alarm and Life Star was placed on standby per BCEMS2 at this time. Engine 823 arrived on scene and reported a two-vehicle accident with both overturned on their sides in the ditch just west of the Hwy 170/802 intersection.
FF Joey Dunkle assumed Hwy 170 Command Port Royal Engine 5 arrived on scene shortly thereafter and the crews began vehcle stabilization while BCEMS began to assess the entrapped patient. After it was determined that the patient was not suffering from any life threatening injuries. the plan to extricate the patient was developed. Due to the patients size and the location of the vehicle in the ditch, it was determined the best course of action was to "roll" the vehicle back onto all four wheels.
Captain/Paramedic Randy Wells then made entry into the vehicle via the back window to control c-spine and protect the patient. The vehcle was then wiched from the passenger side and counter-balanced via rope from the other and was gently rolled onto all four wheels. This then allowed the patient to be extricated via the driver side door and into BCEMS2's care for transport to BMH.
Good job done by all!
