An early morning vehicle accident closed Carolina Avenue for several hours after a vehicle struck a utility pole sending wires across the roadway.  The driver lost control and struck the pole breaking it into 3 pieces.  The vehicle involved in the accident was on the opposite side of the downed wires from responding emergency crews making it difficult for crews to evaluate additional hazards in that area.  Emergency crews were able to access the other side of the downed wires after the power company secured the electricity and cut the wires from the roadway.  Fire crews then placed cribbing blocks around the phone and cable wires to allow EMS and police units to get across the remaining wires without causing additional damage.  No injuries were reported and the roadway was reopened approximately three hours after the accident occurred.

Responding units: Engine 822, EMS 3, BCSO, SC Highway Patrol, SCE&G, Embarq, Charter Communications.

Cribbing blocks were used to allow access over the wires
